API PLAN 53C(MCS 53C Barrier liquid,piston accumulator)
Application
- Applications where no leakage to atmosphere can be tolerated e.g. hazardous, toxic, inflammable media.
- For dirty, abrasive or polymerizing products where media is unsuitable as a lubricant for inboard seal faces.
- Where pump pressure varies during operation needing an auto setting of barrier fluid pressure, thus maintaining the same differential throughout.
Media Characteristics
- Non-polymerizing and clean media
- Poor lubrication properties
- Hazardous / environmentally harmful
- Close to vaporization point
- Can tolerate dilution with barrier media

MCS 53C designed according to API Plan 53C .Barrier fluid system pressurized by a piston accumulator supplying clean liquid for an arrangement 3 pressurized dual seal. The barrier pressure is generated from the seal chamber pressure. The system is self-energizing and reacts to fluctuations in the seal chamber fluid pressure.
Technical Features:
- This system prevents process media leakage to the atmosphere. It is suitable for toxic, hazardous, and non-volatile process media.
- The system uses an external gas source to pressurize the piston accumulator. The accumulator maintains barrier fluid pressure while preventing contact between the pressurizing gas and barrier fluid. This avoids gas absorption into the barrier fluid, reduces seal chamber pressure fluctuations, and enables high-pressure operating conditions.
- The barrier fluid pressure is maintained 0.14-0.41MPa higher than the seal chamber pressure. Minor leakage of barrier fluid into the process system may occur.
- The piston accumulator monitors seal chamber pressure through connected piping and automatically maintains barrier fluid pressure relative to seal pressure, responding instantly to any pressure changes
- The barrier fluid flows from the seal chamber through the pumping ring, passes through the heat exchanger for cooling, and returns to the seal chamber.
- The system is equipped with venting or flare connection.
- The system can be equipped with pressure and temperature sensors based on user operating conditions and requirements.
